Hana Usui

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 27.08.2010, Niklas Maak: [...] The fact that a parting of ways with the classical European idea of pictorial arrangement owes much to an Asian tradition too – which draws spatial boundaries as uniquely as it does the boundaries between calculation and spontaneity, control and chance, writing and image, drawing and symbols – is demonstrated in the Berlin show particularly in the piece by the Japanese artist Hana Usui (born 1974). Her unnamed drawing from 2008, which hints at Hartung's delicate lines as well as classical calligraphy exercises and the organisational charts of airlines, is one of the newest and best pieces in this show – at the same time representing something like the echo of and the synopsis of the development of Euro-American art, which has its roots in the traditional calligraphy of Japan.
